La. Child Poverty Prevention Council In order to call statewide attention to poverty research and data on our state’s most vulnerable citizens, the Picard Center’s Directors of Poverty and Family Studies participate in the activities of the Louisiana Child Poverty Prevention Council. This council was established in response to Act 559 of the 2008 La. Legislative Session, which calls for a 50% reduction in child poverty in Louisiana over the next 10 years.
Some of the Council’s goals include:
Forming mentoring programs;
Extending the findings of research through the interaction and collaboration with community partners;
Enhancing the ability of the community to use and understand research-based initiatives to change their quality of life;
Informing policymakers; and more.
According to the Council, four priorities have been established:
Improving birth outcomes; Becoming a national model for comprehensive, evidence-based, early childhood education initiatives; Strengthening disadvantaged youth connections to school and work; and Raising the state Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
